The Christian Prophets and Their Influence on Religious Society

Conference at the Danish Accademy in Rome
17 March 1999, 17:00

Few themes have received less attention in western theology as the problem of Christian Prophecy. Many famous theologians have lamented the lack of research in the concept of Prophecy. Thus, for instance, Cardinal Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, considered the most important theological organ of the Vatican, in 1993 wrote: "A thorough debate on what the category of the prophetic means and does not mean is strongly needed."

The conference aims at shedding light on this problem of Christian prophecy. Each of the three speakers already have contributed scientifically to the theme of prophecy. The conference will aim at giving an overall introduction to the problem of Christian prophecy, aiming however through theological and anthropological approaches to portray the effects of prophecy in the life of the Church.

The speakers:

Prof. Elmar Salmann, dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Sant Anselmo University and guest lecturer at the Pontifical Gregorian University, has worked substantiously on the relationship between Spirituality and Philosophy. Prof. Salmann in his speech entitled "Prophet, Priest, Theologian - three irreconcilable archetypes?" will give an overall introduction to the theme of Prophecy.

Niels Christian Hvidt, graduate from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Copenhagen in June 1997, wrote a 300 page masters thesis on the problem of Christian Prophecy and is presently pursuing his doctoral studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University. The authenticity of all prophetic experience must be tested before it can play a role in religious life. The paper of Dott. Hvidt will focus on the criteria used when judging the authenticity of the prophets.

Alessandro Toniolo works at the Institute for Pastoral Liturgy in Padova. Dr. Toniolo in his doctoral thesis in Anthropology focused on the research of Victor Turner, which he adapted to he social structures of the Christian church. He has written substantiously on the presence of mysticism and prophecy in the Church as well as their effects in Christian religious life.
